DET Vocabulary #10: Education — 100 Essential Words for a 120+ Score

Hi everyone, Teacher Sam here. 😊

This is the last post in the series — and Education is the right topic to end on, for a reason that surprises most students.

Everyone has something to say about education. You've spent fifteen, twenty years inside it. So when an education prompt appears, you don't freeze the way you might with quantum computing or climate policy. You start talking immediately.

That's the trap. Talking easily and scoring well are not the same thing.

Here are the kinds of prompts you can expect:

Can online classes fully replace in-person learning?

Is a university education necessary for everyone?

Do standardized tests accurately measure a student's ability?

Should the purpose of education be employment, or personal development?

What often separates a stronger DET response from an average one is vocabulary precision, not just grammar. Most test-takers answer these with school, teacher, student, and learn — words they've known since they were twelve. The moment you can say curriculum, disparity, accessibility, or stigmatize, you're no longer describing your own school days. You're discussing education as a system, using more precise language to express more complex ideas.

This post gives you 100 words across three tiers, from foundational vocabulary to expert-level terms most test-takers rarely use.

📚 This post is part of a series

🌍
Part 1 · Foundation Level
Core Vocabulary
Target: 105–115

🔍 Confusing Word Showdown

To score higher, avoid using near-synonyms interchangeably when their precise meanings differ in ways that matter.

⚡ 30-Second Challenge

Choose any three words from this post and answer the following prompt out loud or in writing — using all three naturally in your response.

Should governments invest more in early education or in universities?

Try using words from this list:

equity disparity accessibility attainment socioeconomic underpin

Aim for 3–5 sentences. Focus on natural use — not perfect grammar. Vocabulary becomes usable only when you actively produce it.

🎯 DET Master Structures

Plug these into your Writing Sample or Speaking Sample and customize as needed.

🧩 Structure A — Acknowledging Both Sides
While standardized testing offers a consistent basis for comparison, it often fails to capture the aptitude and curiosity that genuine learning requires.
When to use: Any DET prompt asking you to evaluate testing, grading, or how student ability is measured.
🧩 Structure B — Cause and Effect
Persistent disparity in school funding, combined with unequal access to private tutoring, continues to stratify opportunity long before students reach university.
When to use: Any DET prompt about educational inequality, school funding, or why outcomes differ between students.
🧩 Structure C — The Policy Argument
Governments should improve the accessibility of higher education and promote lifelong learning, rather than treating a single degree as the endpoint of a person's education.
When to use: Any DET prompt about tuition, government responsibility, or the purpose and duration of education.

Teacher Sam's Final Note

Select five words from this list right now. Write one paragraph — responding to this prompt: "Does the education system give every student an equal chance?" — using those 5 words naturally. Vocabulary becomes usable only when you actively produce it.

This is the tenth and final post in the series. Ten topics, one hundred words each — 1,000 DET vocabulary words in total. What you do with them from here is the part that actually matters.

High DET scores don't come from knowing more words. They come from choosing the right words at the right moment.
