The page count is deliberate. Most DET titles I have looked at run well under 200 pages — enough room to describe the test, not enough to train for it. A full course needs space for drills, model answers, error analysis, and repetition. That is what 289 pages buys you, in a workbook format you can write in.

You are studying alone and need a schedule, not more advice. You have taken the test once and still cannot name where the points went. You want practice with answer keys, not just explanations. And you are working toward the 110 to 130 range for admission.

The tutor, teacher, or academy

Built for classroom instruction and independent study alike. Three parts and thirteen chapters, usable as a ready-made syllabus, with each chapter carrying enough material for a full session plus homework. The 30-day calendar maps directly onto a short intensive program.

A note for instructors

If you have ever built a DET course from scratch, you know the hard part is not teaching. It is sequencing — which question type comes first, what to drill in week two, when to introduce timed conditions. The three-part structure answers that. Reading, then Listening, then the Production System. You can teach it in order without redesigning anything.

I live and teach in Canada. The score you need is not an abstract number to me — it is the difference between an offer letter from an Ontario college and another semester of waiting. That perspective shapes which score bands the book targets and which programs it references.

Real-World Image Practice

Photo tasks are where prepared candidates often lose ground. They rehearse on clean stock images, then face something cluttered and ordinary on test day. This book drills on real photographs, so you practise the harder skill: deciding what to describe.

The TSM Formula — a production system, not a template

Memorised templates are one of the most common reasons Speaking and Writing scores stop moving. The scoring engine is not generous toward answers that look assembled from a fixed frame. TSM — Topic, Support, Meaning — organises information density under time pressure rather than giving you a shell to fill in. Chapter 7 introduces it, and Chapters 8 through 13 run on it.

How each chapter is built

Every chapter follows the same shape, so you always know where you are.

The mechanics, before any strategy. What the screen actually looks like, how many questions appear, how long you get, how many replays you have. Chapter 5 opens with the Listen & Type interface and a specification table — six to nine questions per test, sixty seconds each, up to three playbacks — because you cannot build a strategy on a format you are guessing at.

What separates high scorers. Named traps, not general advice. In Listen & Type it is contractions and function words: the hardest words to catch are the short ones, and a missing article can go unnoticed until the answer key proves otherwise.

Practice with a diagnostic answer key. Every item tells you what to watch for, not just whether you were right. And in Chapters 5, 6, and 13 the practice items come with real audio files, named and ready in the download.

Chapter 7 is the one the second half runs on. TSM comes in three densities — Survival-3, Standard-5, Advanced-7 — and the number refers to information density, not sentence count. A three-sentence response carrying the weight of five is a TSM-5. That distinction is the reason the system does not collapse into a template.

The 30-day calendar

The appendix is a single-page calendar you can tear out and pin above your desk. Thirty days, three phases, and a specific chapter assigned to each one.

Days 1–10 — Reading and Listening. Accuracy work first, because those subscores hold up everything else. Week 1 closes with a review day, and Day 10 is your first low-pressure mock test.

Days 11–20 — Speaking and Writing. Photo description, Read Then Speak, the Speaking Sample, Interactive Writing. This is where TSM moves from theory into production, with a second mock test on Day 20.

Days 21–30 — Full integration. Interactive Speaking, the Writing Sample, weak-point recovery, and two more mock tests. Day 27 is the No-Template Challenge: generate a full response on your own, with nothing memorised.

About the title

Thirty days is the schedule this book is built around, not a promise. Where you start matters, and so does how much of the plan you actually finish. What I can say is that learners who follow a structured sequence tend to see clearer movement than learners who put in the same hours without one. The calendar even says it at the bottom: missing a day is okay. Pick up the next one.

What score range is it aimed at?

The material is built for learners working from roughly 90 toward 120 and above. If you are starting lower, the book still works, but expect to spend longer on Part 1 before beginning the 30-day sequence.

Can I teach a class with it?

Yes, and it was written with that in mind. Three parts and thirteen chapters function as a syllabus, and each chapter carries enough material for a full session plus homework.

Do I still need an online practice tool?

Online simulators are useful for screen stamina and timing nerve, and this book does not replace that. What it adds is the strategy and the error analysis a simulator cannot give you — the part where you find out why the answer was wrong.
